IN connection with the reply given by the Punjab Government at the last meeting of the Punjab Legislative Council to a question referring to the grant of grain compensation allowance on the basis of wheat not being only or principal staple food of the people of the province, it is interesting to learn that recently the Commissioner in Sind asked the Sukkur Municipality why wheat "which was generally used by the rich" was exempted from terminal tax. In reply the Municipal Committee passed a resolution, in which it said: -" The Board is not prepared to levy a tax on wheat or wheat flour as had been deliberated upon at the time of framing the new schedule ….. The Board considers wheat as the staple food within the Municipal district and therefore not liable to taxation."
