A special team formed by Civil Surgeon Rajesh Kumar Bagga on Tuesday raided tobacco shops in various areas of the city under the Tobacco Control Programme and issued challans for violating the Tobacco Control Act, 2003.
The team was led by Dr Kamal Kishore, nodal officer, tobacco control in-charge, drug inspector Amarjeet Singh and representatives from various departments, including Municipal Corporation, Police, Excise and Taxation, Education.
The team carried out surprise inspections of shops around the railway station, railway road, Mandi Fentonganj and other areas.
During the inspection, it also found tobacco products on which maximum retail price (MRP) was not mentioned on their packing.
The special team issued challans to violators and also collected fine. It warned shopkeepers to strictly follow the Tobacco Control Act, 2003.
An activist, Surinder Saini, said being in the vicinity of a government school, shops should have been sealed for selling tobacco products.
He said shop owners could even be penalised heavily and jailed as per the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COPTA).
