It’s known by many names — jeans, denim, best friend, my forever pyjama! The “blue jeans”, made from denim cloth, were invented in 1871 by Jacob W Davis and Levi Strauss & Co (better known as Levis). Until 1950, this versatile garment was only used worn by the cowboys of the wild wild West and miners. It became a hit with the teenagers and played a huge part in the hippie culture in the 1970s.
Fast forward to today and the humble denim has undergone a fashion revolution. And it’s not just on your waist. From the 501s to skinny ones, it has become a statement and undergoes constant reinvention every year. While its cowboy shape with huge wide bottoms still exists, its present state has the jeans in a very “distressed feel”. Denims are getting a makeover with bows, ties, jacket and shoes now available in denim. Claudia Li, a New York-based designer gives her jeans a totally new look with patterns and fringes. Yes you read it right: The latest trend sweeping fashionistas is the fringe. Celebrities have been sporting these at various shows and swear by the statement it makes. Pair this with an oversized blouse, don your favourite pair of sunglasses and finish the look with a great pair of sneakers for the day or blingy stilettos for an evening out on the town!
In summer, booty shorts rule the roost and earlier this year Kendall Jenner made a total fashion statement by wearing a pair of white shorts and left her ankle strips on giving it a feel of a full sized denim! She paired it with an oversized satin shirt and simple sneakers, making it a total Instagrammable pic for her generation!
Denim jackets have always been a rage with the teenagers and travellers alike. However, 2017 sees a twist. Those who follow fashion would remember denim goddess Rihanna walking into a party wearing the most outrageous denim on denim Canadian Tuxedo and still look like a million bucks.
Another trend that has been making the rounds in the fashion world is denim boots. They go all the way to the thigh. The first appearance of these can be credited to Jennifer Lopez in her video, “I ain’t your mama”! She wears denim boots that are strapped to the waist by a belt while she effortlessly dances in them! Reality star Kim Kardashian also sported shaded denim boots designed by her rapper husband Kanye West’s line Yeazy.
Denim has also seen its way into bags, belts, accessories and even full-fledged dresses. The latest trends are lighter dresses, which are close to Chambray, and come in an oversized shape. A-line dresses, curves with belts or even simple large sleeves are swaying the season towards them.
So get out your denims — be it boyfriend, mother, fringe or skinny — and style it up. Add that flair, put on your best shades of red and rock the world.
