Hisar, October 3
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has urged the farmers to punish the government which has betrayed the crisis-ridden peasantry by not offering remunerative prices and other benefits.
He was addressing the Kisan-Majdoor rally organised by the All-India Kisan Sabha here today.
Sarkar said things had gone from bad to worse in the country. “Interests of the farmers, working class and depressed sections of society are being compromised to extend benefits to big corporate houses. The neo-liberal policies are curtailing the rights of the poor sections of society,” he said, while urging the farmers not to commit suicide and wage a struggle to assert their rights.
Lashing out at the BJP-led NDA government, the Tripura CM said theatrics being adopted by the ruling party in the name of false sense of nationalism was only harming the all-inclusive and vibrant society. “The government is adopting the ‘divide and rule’ policy,” he alleged.
Hannan Molla, general secretary, AIKS, said the government’s refusal to implement the Swaminathan Commission recommendations had exposed its anti-farmer attitude. He said that agriculture and animal husbandry had been at the receiving end due to wrong policies of the NDA.
