Taking a tough stance against stubble burning, the district authorities have suspended two sarpanches and issued challans to 100 farmers in the past three weeks.
Officials revealed that 17 cases were registered on Thursday and challans had gone up to 100 till date.
Sources say though the number of cases of stubble burning this time has been less than half than last year, the registration of cases or issuing of challans have been highest so far since introduction of penalty cause.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mani Ram Sharma said that Dalbir and Satyadev Gautam, sarpanches of Baswa and Biduki villages, respectively, had been suspended for their failure to curb the problem. “FIRs have also been recommended against 47 persons, including farmers and officials, of various departments for irregularities,” he added.
The sources said that out of the total cases registered between September 30 and October 24, as many as 70 per cent of the incidents had been reported from Biduki and Baswa villages. Similar incidents had been reported from 18 other villages.
The authorities have issued directions to all departments, including the Agriculture, to submit a report to the office of the Deputy Commissioner daily.
Admitting that action had been taken, Kuldeep Singh, an official of the Agriculture Department, said an amount of Rs 2.75 lakh had been recovered as penalty.
