New Delhi, January 15
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has taken charge of round-the-clock security at Victoria Memorial, Kolkata, from Monday. “Initially, 92 security personnel have been deployed against the sanctioned strength of 111,” a CISF spokesperson said.
“The unit will be headed by deputy commandant-rank officer. The force now provides security to 341 places, including government and non-government institutes,” he said. An institution of national importance, Victoria Memorial also houses a museum that boasts of vast collection of rare and valuable artifacts.
In 2004, after the theft of Tagore’s Nobel medallion from the Visva-Bharati and a fifth century Buddha bust from the Indian Museum, a PIL was filed in Supreme Court questioning the security lapses at the Victoria Memorial and Indian Museum.
The apex court had, on February 15, 2015, asked the Centre to deploy CISF at the memorial.
