A team of doctors from the Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana, today visited Rupalon village near Doraha to provide training to the villagers as well as the NSS volunteers of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha.
Dr Daljit Singh Khurana, professor, Vegetable Department, PAU, educated them about kitchen gardening and vegetables to be grown in different seasons of the year. He asked the volunteers to utilise even the minimum vacant space in their homes to grow vegetables, so that they may be consumed in their pure natural form. He said the vegetables and fruits available in the market contained high quantity of pesticides which may prove fatal for the health of the consumers.
Dr Heera Singh, another expert, advised the villagers to visit abroad only after gaining proper knowledge of various courses. He said they should plan to go overseas only for studies rather than being beguiled by other attractions by agents and wrong sources.
Pushpinder Singh, Senior Food Technologist,PAU, educated the villagers and volunteers regarding preservation of various fruits and vegetables in the form of juices, squashes, jams, jellies and candies. He also gave practical training by preparing juices, jams and squashes and motivated them to adopt it as a profession to become economically independent.
Dr Pushpinder Singh also asked the villagers to form various self-help groups to keep themselves busy while sitting at home at the same time.
The villagers themselves prepared squashes and jams under the supervision of experts and felt satisfied.
