Ravi (39), a vegetable seller, who contested the Lok Sabha elections from Shimla (reserved) parliamentary constituency as an Independent earlier this year, has shot off a letter to President Ram Nath Kovind, requesting the latter to appoint him as a temporary executioner (hangman) at the Tihar Jail to hang Nirbhaya gangrape convicts.

In the letter, Ravi has stated that he came to know through newspapers and electronic media that there was no executioner in the Tihar Jail, which was why the capital punishment to the culprits was being delayed. “I want to become a hangman and punish the rapists so that Nirbhaya gets justice,” Ravi said.

“The gruesome rape and murder of a veterinary doctor has once again shocked the country and exemplary punishment to rapists is the need of the hour,” he added. A copy of the letter is with The Tribune.

“I am a social activist and such atrocities move me. I wish to hang such culprits,” stated Ravi in the one-page letter, which has gone viral.

Earlier this year, Ravi had contested the Lok Sabha elections as he felt that for the past three decades, the power had remained with one family in Shimla, but neither the BJP nor the Congress worked for the welfare of the SC, poor and down-trodden.

A man with limited resources, Ravi is unhappy that even basic facilities like good roads, health and quality education in government schools are not available in all parts of the constituency, with backward areas suffering the most.
