Bikram, who hails from Jamitgarh village in Balachaur tehsil, required immediate transplant. At this crucial time of his life where any more delay could be fatal, Jaswinder stood to his side and donated her kidney.

The transplant was performed at Alchemist Hospital, Panchkula, which runs a certified centre for performing kidney transplants with a team, including Dr Neeraj Goyal, kidney transplant surgeon and consultant, urology, Dr Ramesh Kumar and Dr Charanjit Lal, both senior consultants, nephrology, and Dr Rajiv Goyal, senior consultant, urology.

Dr SK Sharma, former director of the PGI, Chandigarh, heads the department of renal sciences.

Dr Neeraj Goyal said the donor surgery, i.e. harvest of kidney from donor, was performed using advanced laparoscopic technique of ‘retroperitoneoscopic donor nephrectomy’, a surgery that has got many advantages over conventional laparoscopic or open donor surgery.

Meanwhile, one of greatest advantage of starting a transplant programme at Alchemist was the smoother and well-organised process of legal documentation, said Dr Goyal, adding this involves a single counter clearance before conducting operations of live related kidney transplant that shortens the time involved in legal documentation and limits the sufferings of patients.
