Meha Bhargava
Everybody knows how first impressions are but not everybody knows that the first impression is actually only a seven second window upon first meeting someone. According to the Albert Mehrabian’s communication model, 7 per cent of meaning in the words that are spoken.
38 per cent of meaning are paralinguistic (the way that the words are said). 55 per cent of meaning are in facial expression. This explains the buzz around first impressions. Long before you are close enough to speak, you announce yourself. The way you dress, are groomed (care for yourself) walk into a room (body language), and seriousness of your expressions trumps way before you actually put words in a conversation.
The language of dress, grooming and body is far more persuasive than any spoken language, and thus using these make the base of a powerful and successful image.
The 5 steps to a positive first impression are:
- Clothes are the most noticeable thing about a person and make a powerful impression. Use your clothing as a resource and turn a tiny possibility into a window to newer opportunities.
- Grooming, which includes body hygiene, hair care, nail care and makeup makes a lasting impression too. If you do not have well kept hands and feet, lack good hygiene, then it will not impress anyone, rather portray a negative image.
- Body language, including posture, eye contact, handshakes, head and body movement are essential to keep in mind. If one slacks over a couch or chair, handshakes reluctantly the person across the table might feel that the you are disinterested.
- Facial expressions, play the most important role as pleasant facial reactions speak a lot about an individual's frame of mind.
- Communication skills include your voice, pitch, modulations and ability to speak clearly as only a decent attire or a pretty face would not always impress people. Being able to express yourself confidently also matters a great deal.
Together, these elements create a unique and memorable image of you, be it as a first impression or as an image that comes immediately to mind of those who know you.
