Tokyo: Japan has started testing its fastest-ever bullet train — capable of reaching 400 km per hour — as it continues to develop the revolutionary mode of travel The ALFA-X version of the Shinkansen train began three years’ worth of test runs on Friday, the CNN reported. Once it enters operations, it will run at speeds of up to 360 kmph. IANS

Cuba launches widespread rationing in face of crisis

Havana: The Cuban government is launching widespread rationing of chicken, eggs, rice, beans, soap and other basic products in the face of a grave economic crisis. Commerce Minister Betsy Díaz Velázquez said various forms of rationing would be employed in order to deal with shortages of staple foods. She blamed it on hardening of the US trade embargo by the Trump administration. AP

37 spotted seal pups rescued from China, released

Beijing: Animal rights groups have cheered the release of 37 spotted seal pups rescued from traffickers into the wild in northern China. Humane Society International says the pups were discovered three months ago by the police in a shed on a remote farm in the northern city of Dalian, many of them starving and dying. Eight suspects were arrested in the operation. AP
