Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron is promising new protection for women abused by their husbands or boyfriends, amid growing concern about women killed by abusive partners. In a Facebook post, Macron listed the names of more than 50 women killed as a result of domestic violence. Saying “the violence that took your life sickens us, revolts us,” he promised new measures and better use of existing protections. Earlier, protesters in Paris demanded tougher police action when women report abuse. A French feminist group tracking women killed by current or former partners says the number is on the rise this year. AP
Disney Channel star Cameron Boyce dies at 20
Los Angeles: Actor Cameron Boyce, best known for his performance in the Disney Channel’s television shows and series, has died at age 20. According to ABC News, the actor passed away on Saturday morning after suffering a seizure as a result of “an ongoing medical condition”. Cameron became popular with his role on Disney Channel’s “Jessie” and in the “Descendants” movies. The third film in the franchise will release in August. He also was the voice of Jake in “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” series. Born in LA, Boyce made his acting debut at the age on nine with horror film “Mirrors”. PTI
Wife of arrested Chinese ex-Interpol chief sues agency
Paris: The wife of former Interpol President Meng Hongwei is suing the international police agency, accusing Interpol of failing to protect him from arrest in China and failing to protect his family. Meng’s wife Grace Meng said her lawyers filed a legal complaint in the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, Netherlands. She says Interpol “breached its obligations owed to my family” and “is complicit in the internationally wrongful acts of its member country, China.” Interpol said Sunday it strongly disputes the allegations. Meng Hongwei was arrested in September amid a campaign against corruption. AP
Johnson heading for landslide win to become UK PM
London: Former British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson will win three quarters of the votes in a ballot to choose the UK’s next Prime Minister, according to a new opinion poll published by the Times newspaper. The poll result came on Saturday as ballot papers started to arrive at the homes of 160,000 members of the ruling Conservative Party, reports Xinhua news agency. Johnson is going head-to-head with incumbent Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt in the race to succeed outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May as leader of the Conservative Party. In the YouGov/Times poll, Johnson is backed by 74% of party members and Hunt 26%. IANS
