Turbulence injures 21 on Air Canada flight from China
Ottawa: As many as 21 passengers, including three children, on an Air Canada flight from China were injured in a severe turbulence and taken to hospital. Flight AC088 was en route to Toronto from Shanghai Pudong Airport on Wednesday but was hit by violent turbulence and forced to stop in the city of Calgary in west Canada's Alberta province to treat the injured. The Boeing 777-300ER carrying 332 passengers and 19 crew members landed at 3:23 p.m. at Calgary. IANS
11 held over China’s Shenzhen landslide
Beijing: Eleven people have been arrested for alleged negligence leading to one of China's worst landslides in the southeastern manufacturing hub of Shenzhen as the death toll in the disaster climbed to 12, officials said Thursday. The December 20 disaster happened when a huge man-made mound of earth and construction debris lost stability and collapsed, destroying 33 buildings in the industrial city. PTI
China building 2nd aircraft carrier; hints at third one
Beijing: Amid mounting tensions with the US in the disputed South China Sea, China on Thursday said it is building a second aircraft carrier and hinted at plans to make a third one to enhance its blue water capabilities. This carrier, with a displacement of 50,000 tonnes, will be a base for J-15 fighters and other types of aircraft, Colonel Yang Yujun told a monthly press briefing. PTI

London: The BBC’s web network and its iPlayer streaming service crashed on Thursday after a web attack by hackers. Many users complained on social media after being met an error message, saying there had been an “internal error” on one of the world's busiest news websites. It later emerged the corporation had suffered a DDoS — a distributed denial of service — attack. PTI
