Bathinda, February 22

The Bathinda Central Jail authorities recovered four mobile phones from as many inmates during a special checking drive by CRPF personnel here on Tuesday.

The inmates from whom these phones were recovered were identified as Rahul Sood of Jalandhar, Saurav Partap of Amritsar, Ajay Singh of Faridkot and Rakesh Kumar of Bathinda.

The jail superintendent lodged a complaint with the Cantt police station demanding action against the jail inmates. A probe has been initiated. It is pertinent to mention that a mobile phone was recovered from Rahul last month too and a case was registered against him.

More than 32 mobile phones have been seized from Central Jail inmates since January. Despite the recovery of a large number of mobile phones, the jail authorities and the police have failed to trace how these mobile phones enter the jail premises. In the past two years, over 100 phones have been recovered from the jail.

In November, a CRPF company was deployed at various parts of the jail to strengthen the security system. Despite deploying paramilitary forces, officials have failed to check the instances of sneaking prohibited material, including drugs and cell phones, into high-security jails. The Union Home Ministry had sanctioned four CRPF companies for the Amritsar, Ludhiana, Kapurthala and Bathinda Central Jails. — TNS
