Akal varsity students excel

Bathinda: Students of Akal University performed well in the recently announced results of UGC-NET, an examination to determine eligibility for the post of Assistant Professor and awarding Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in the Indian universities and colleges. Every year, around nine lakh students take the exam, which is held twice a year. In the December 2019 examination, two second year MCom students of the university, Sukhmanpreet Kaur and Harjot Kaur, cleared the exam and became eligible for the JRF. Apart from them, Paramjit Kaur, a second year student of MA (Punjabi), has also cleared the test. The university prepares students for various competitive examinations. Vice-chancellor of the university Professor Gurmail Singh, Dean (academic) Prof MS Johal and Registrar Prof Saravan Singh congratulated the students. TNS

Inter-school athletics meet

Bathinda: Mata Sahib Kaur Girls’ Collegiate Senior Secondary School, Talwandi Sabo, which is managed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, will hold an inter-school athletics meet on January 10. The event, which has been titled, ‘Aao Khediye’, will see participation of students from more than 30 schools. Games such as 100m race, 200m race, 400m race and 800m race, long jump, high jump and shot-put will be part of the sports meet. Students will also participate in cultural games such as skipping, bowing handkerchief, tug-of-war, ‘geete’ and ‘stappu’. Some entertaining games such as lemon and spoon race, sack race, chatty race and three-legs race will also be organised. Students from Classes IX to Class XII will take part in the event. Principal Dr Kawaljit Kaur said the motive of the event was to encourage students to take part in physical activities.. TNS

Thieves target two vehicles

Muktsar: Thieves stole a Pik-Up van and a car on the intervening night of January 3 and 4 from Malout town. The Malout (City) police have registered a case of theft against unidentified persons in two separate incidents and started investigation. TNS

batteries worth Rs 1.5 lakh stolen

Muktsar: The Lambi police on Tuesday registered a case of theft against some unidentified persons on the complaint of Het Ram of Tarmala village. In the complaint, Het Ram stated that thieves stole batteries worth Rs 1.5 lakh from the BSNL telephone exchange at Ghumiara village here on December 28. TNS

Man held with sedative pills

Muktsar: The Kabarwala police on Tuesday arrested a man allegedly carrying 500 sedative pills on a motorcycle from near Shamkhera village here. The accused has been identified as Gulshan Kumar of the same village. A case under various sections of the NDPS Act has been registered against him. TNS
