Bathinda: The authorities seized drug powder from the Central Jail here on Saturday night. Jail Assistant Superintendent Binder Singh told the Cantonment police that on January 11, a jail guard was patrolling in barrack number 3. On suspicion, he searched inmate Manpreet Singh and recovered 1.19 gram of drug powder from him. A case has been registered against the inmate at the Cantonment police station. A few days ago, mobile phones were recovered from a barrack and the bathroom. Jail officials also recovered a bundle of ‘beedis’. Since December 1, more than 20 mobile phones have been recovered from the jail. Prohibited items continue to make its way inside the jail premises despite the deployment of the CRPF, raising questions over the security system of the prison. The state had demanded deployment of paramilitary forces after nefarious activities, including sneaking of prohibited materials, were reported from Central jails in the state. TNS
