Lohri of newborn girls celebrated in Faridkot

In an effort to protect unborn girls, many of whom are killed in the womb itself, the district administration celebrated Lohri of 251 newborn girls under the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign of the Union Government at Baba Farid Open Air Cultural Centre here on Friday.

Faridkot Deputy Commissioner Kumar Saurabh Raj said the aim was to generate awareness and improve efficiency of various welfare schemes for girls.

All newborn girls were presented with various gifts, including blankets. Speaking on the occasion, the DC said women had been playing various important roles in their life. He gave examples of several women who had brought laurels to society and their families.

Overall sex ratio improves

According to Census 2011, Faridkot had 850 females per 1,000 males in the city. The sex ratio for general category was 823 in comparison with 920 for Scheduled Castes. There were 825 girls below six per 1,000 boys of the same age in the city as per the Census.

The overall sex ratio in the city had witnessed an increase of 14 females per 1,000 males from 2001 to 2011. The child sex ratio had also increased by 10 girls per 1,000 boys during the same time. The child sex ratio (0–6 years) in the country was 927 girls per 1,000 boys in 2001, which dropped to 918 girls per 1,000 boys in 2011.
