Man shot at by assailants, critical in PGI

Bathinda, November 21

Following an argument over eve-teasing at Bhagta Bhai Ka village, miscreants fired at a man, injuring him seriously in Bhagta Bhai Ka village here on this morning.

While residents of the village caught hold of two assailants and roughed them up, the third assailant managed to flee the spot. The condition of the injured man is said to be critical till the filing of the report.

A case has been registered against the three accused at the Dayalpura police station. The injured man has been identified as 23-year-old Gurpreet Singh, who accused the assailants of eve-teasing.

Kuldeep Singh, maternal uncle of Gurpreet, said, “On Thursday morning, a heated verbal exchange took place between them following which the assailants fired a bullet at Gurpreet that pierced through his neck injuring him seriously. Gurpreet was taken to the government hospital at Bhagta and later shifted to the Civil Hospital in Bathinda. The doctors after observing his critical condition again referred him to a private hospital in the city from where he was shifted to Adesh Medical Hospital.”

Talking to Bathinda Tribune, Jasbeer Singh said, “There was an old enmity between the accused and Gurpreet Singh. Today, when he was walking near the overbridge in the village, the assailants came there and fired a bullet at him. When the accused tried to run from the place, they were caught by residents and handed over to the police. The injured was taken to a private hospital in the city after his condition worsened and later he was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh.”

The police have registered a case under Section 307 of the IPC and relevant sections of the Arms Act against the three accused, who have been identified as Harpreet Singh, Manpreet Singh from Romana Ajit Singh village and Avtar Singh, a resident of Rode village. The police have started further investigation in the matter.

Station House Officer Inspector Rajinder Kumar said two accused Harpreet Singh and Manpreet Singh had been arrested by the police and the third one managed to flee the crime scene. The police have launched a hunt to nab the third accused.
