No check on pollution flow in Sirhind Canal

Sirhind Canal, which is considered as the lifeline of this part of the Malwa region as its water is used for drinking and agricultural purposes, is being polluted with garbage, municipal waste, non-biodegradable material and other pollutants.

Most of the waste material can be seen floating on water in the canal. Despite creating awareness about disposal of waste by the civic body, it seems residents are hardly concerned. Besides, there is no check on those who throw waste into the canal.

Residents said as the underground water was unfit for human consumption due to high fluoride content and other impurities, they were left with no other option but to use the canal water for drinking.

Irrigation department officials said in day time, they kept a vigil and did not allow people to throw garbage into it. According to them, it has come to notice that people throw garbage into the canal at night.
