Bathinda, August 10

The Punjab Palledar Workers Union today protested in Bathinda against the Union and state governments, demanding an end to the contract labour system. During the protest, the labourers blocked the main road and burnt effigies of both governments outside the bus stand.

Hundreds of labourers from Bathinda gathered at the grain market and then marched in protest to the bus stand. There, they demonstrated and burnt effigies. The protesters expressed that despite repeated demands, their issues were not being addressed. Neither the Centre nor the Punjab Government was taking steps to end the contract labour system.

Baldev Singh, district head of the Palledar Union, Barnala, said they had been struggling for a long time to have their demands met. However, the governments had not taken any initiative to resolve their issues. He emphasised that their main demand was to end the contract labour system and ensure direct payment to them.
