Bathinda, January 27

To curb the use of Chinese string, the police conducted raids on terraces in the city on Sunday. The police also sensitised the kite fliers to the ill-effects of the use of Chinese string.

On Sunday, police teams conducted raids in various areas, including Mehna Chowk, Qila Road, Nita Street, Pujan Wala Mohalla and Sidian Wala Mohalla, where several residents, including children, were flying kites using Chinese string.

After getting information about the police, many residents, who were flying kites, threw their Chinese string rolls from the terrace. However, police personnel managed to catch hold of a few children. Thereafter, they were sensitised to the use of the string and its dangerous impacts.

ASI Rajinder Kumar said, “We asked residents not to use the deadly string. But if people do not stop using the Chinese string despite our counselling and awareness, we will start taking strict action against the offenders. We have even destroyed Chinese string rolls on the spot.”

City residents said such raids and awareness drives would go long way in addressing the grave problem. Sources said more than 40 teams had been formed to keep a check on the use of Chinese string on Basant Panchami. The police said if anybody sells or uses Chinese string, residents must inform them on 75080-18100.

Meanwhile, a man sustained injuries on his neck after coming in contact with a Chinese string near the city bus stand area. The victim was identified as Gopal Das who was later admitted to hospital.
