Women achievers in various fields were awarded for their valuable contributions at the Kalpana Chawla Memorial Excellence Awards ceremony at Guru Kashi University, Talwandi Sabo, here on Saturday.

Renowned astronaut Kalpana Chawla’s father Banarasi Lal Chawla presided over the event as the chief guest. At the event, Dr Inderjit Kaur, who is a patron-president of the All-India Pingalwada Charitable Society, and Sonica Bhatnagar were felicitated for social works followed by, AIIMS (Delhi) Prof Sujata Sharma for her contribution in the field of science; Navjot Kaur in the field of academics and social service; Jassi Sangha for raising voice against commoditisation of women in Punjabi songs and social work; Dilrajpreet Kaur, a yoga therapist, for working to nurture healthy society; and Gurveer Kaur for academics and creating awareness about child sexual abuse.

These women were given a memento, shawl and an appreciation letter. Megha Mann, APRO, was also felicitated during the award function. On the occasion, 43 girl students and Vijaylakshmi, in-charge of the women wing of the university, were also felicitated. The chief guest, along with other dignitaries, inaugurated Kalpana Chawla museum.

In his address, Banarasi Lal Chawla said, “Female education is most important and parents must come forward to provide higher education to their girl children.” Inderjit Kaur said, “A woman plays a pivotal role in shaping society, therefore, she must be given due recognition.”
