Factory building collapses after major fire triggers blast
Two separate fire incidents in the early hours of Saturday kept emergency crews on their toes in the Capital. A factory collapsed after a fire broke out in the Bawana area, while three persons suffered injuries in another fire incident in Old Delhi.
A major fire broke out at a factory in Sector 2 of the DSIIDC, Bawana, here around 5 am. According to Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officials, the fire triggered a blast that caused the entire structure to collapse.
A total of 17 fire engines were pressed into service to douse the flames. Though no injuries were reported, the operation lasted several hours due to extensive cooling requirements.
In another incident, a fire broke out in a residential area near Lahori Gate in Old Delhi’s Farsh Khana locality. The fire was traced to electrical meter boxes and a nearby motorcycle. As many as five fire tenders were pressed into service. By 4:50 am, the situation was under control.
Three persons suffered serious burn injuries in the incident. Those injured include a 13-year-old boy with 50 per cent burns, Nabi Ahmed (18) with 45 per cent, and Shahnavaz (30) with 40 per cent burns. They have been admitted to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital and are currently under observation.
Though the cause of the fire remains under investigation, preliminary findings point to a possible short-circuit.
