Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Devender Yadav on Friday lashed out at the BJP-led Delhi Government’s proposal to impose a “congestion tax” during peak traffic hours on select routes, calling it a “total injustice” to the people and a move that would further burden citizens already reeling under high taxes.
Yadav said the Rekha Gupta government’s plan to introduce a congestion tax on nearly 250 busy roads in the Capital was yet another financial blow to the common man.
“No other state in India imposes a congestion tax. The BJP government is setting new records in extracting money from the public,” he said. He said the worsening state of public transport in the city had forced people to rely on private vehicles, making the government’s move unjustified.
Highlighting other recent price hikes, Yadav said the government had already been levying a slew of taxes on Delhiites — from “user charge” for garbage collection, rise in Power Purchase Agreement Charge (PPAC) to Rs 50 hike per LPG cylinder and an increase in excise duty on petrol and diesel.
“If the government had taken timely steps to improve the public transport system, there would have been no need to impose this so-called congestion tax,” Yadav said.
