Over 100 donate blood at GMCH camp

More than 100 persons donated blood at a camp organised to mark World Blood Donor Day at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, here on Saturday.

The camp was inaugurated by AK Attri, Director-Principal, GMCH-32. The donors included GMCH faculty, staff, students, resident doctors and other volunteers. A function was also held to felicitate regular blood donors and donor organisations.

Over 60 blood donor organisations from Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh were honoured for their dedication and unwavering commitment to saving lives.

Blood donors who responded to telephonic calls for providing platelets and special matched blood to thalassemia patients were also honoured.

Dr Ravneet Kaur, Professor and Head, Department of Transfusion Medicine, GMCH, highlighted the theme of World Blood Donor Day this year — ‘Give blood, give hope: together we save lives’.

The event also aimed at furthering the cause of voluntary blood donation in Chandigarh and achieving the target of 100% voluntary safe blood donation.

20 students donate blood at Mohali institute

Meanwhile, over 20 students donated blood during a camp organised at Dr BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), on World Blood Donor Day. Dr Bhavneet Bharti, Director-Principal of AIMS Mohali, led by example as she recounted her journey as a blood donor, which began on her 18th birthday as a first-year medical student. Since then, she has donated blood more than 50 times. Dr Sunita Bhagat, Joint Director, Blood Transfusion Services, PSACS, was the guest of honour at the event.
