Jammu road rage accused remanded in 6-day police custody

The accused in the recent Jammu road rage case, who allegedly attempted to run over a 68-year-old businessman with his Thar SUV in the upscale Gandhi Nagar area, has been remanded in six days of police custody.

Manan Anand, an engineering student and resident of Nanak Nagar, allegedly hit Kamal Dutta twice with his vehicle during a road rage incident on Sunday afternoon, sparking public outrage. Following pressure from the public and swift police action, Anand was arrested on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the Judicial Magistrate (1st Class) granted police remand of the accused until August 5. The remand was granted in connection with an FIR registered at Gandhi Nagar police station under Sections 281, 125(a), and 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The court noted that Section 109 of the BNS is non-bailable and that the investigation is still in its preliminary stages. The remand was granted after the court reviewed the accused’s medical and fitness certificates. In addition, the court directed the police to produce the accused before it on or before the expiry of the remand period. It also instructed authorities to conduct a medical examination of the accused every 24 hours during his custody.
