Punjabi University professor nominated on national panels
Patiala: Dr Damanjit Sandhu, Professor and Head of the Department of Psychology, Punjabi University, Patiala, has been nominated on two national expert committees of the National Institute of Social Defence, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, for developing and reviewing training programmes for Panchayati Raj functionaries, social work educators and police functionaries on issues like prevention of drug abuse, old-age care, beggary prevention and welfare of transgenders. 181 kg poppy husk seized
Ropar: The local police have arrested three narcotics smugglers and confiscated 181 kg poopy husk and 240 pills of psychotropic drugs from them. Ropar SSP Guljeet Singh Khurana said those arrested were Hardeep Singh of Gondpur Jai Chand village in Una, Abhishek of Amroh village in Talwara and Babandeep Singh of Ramgarh Manda village in Morinda. Cases under the NDPS act have been registered against all of them. TNS
Protest against police inaction
Faridkot: Hundreds of labourers, farmers, women, students, ex-servicemen, migrant workers and sanitation workers resumed a dharna outside the SSP office. They alleged the February 9 agreement between the committee and the police had not been implemented due to political interference. They accused the police of delaying action against those named in cases involving caste-based abuse and police firing on protesting labourers during a dispute over a water-drainage at Chandbhan village. Concern over toll plaza
Fazilka: Ferozepur MP Sher Singh Ghubaya has alleged violations in the construction of the six-lane road between Fazilka and Abohar on National Highway number 7. In a representation to Union minister Nitin Gadkari, he has alleged that a toll plaza was being constructed around 4 km away from the Fazilka municipal boundary in violation of the norms. Rule 8(1) of the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008, provides that a toll plaza must not be located within 5 km of the MC boundaries, he said. OC
