Hyderabad, August 2025: Ankura Hospital for Women and Children has announced a global medical milestone in pediatric surgery. Dr. V.V.S. Chandrasekharam, Chief of Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Urology, has successfully performed his 900th laparoscopic pyeloplasty in children suffering from ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction — the highest number reported by any surgeon worldwide. UPJ obstruction is a condition in which the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder becomes narrowed or blocked, leading to swelling of the kidney and progressive loss of kidney function. Pyeloplasty is a reconstructive procedure that removes or bypasses this obstruction, thereby preserving kidney function.
Explaining the benefits of the laparoscopic approach, Dr. Chandrasekharam said, “Keyhole surgery has transformed outcomes in pediatric urology. Smaller cuts mean less pain, faster recovery, minimal scarring, and reduced blood loss compared to traditional open procedures. These surgeries can be safely performed even in infants as young as one month.” With over three decades of experience, Dr.Chandrasekharam is recognized internationally for his contributions to pediatric urology. A Gold Medallist from AIIMS, New Delhi, he has trained surgeons across India and overseas, published more than 90 scientific papers, and authored three books on pediatric urology. He has also pioneered several minimally invasive techniques in pediatric surgery, including bladder and ureteral reconstruction, ureteral reimplantation, nephrectomy, and surgery for duplex kidneys.
The ankura hospital reported a success rate of 97–98% for laparoscopic pyeloplasty, making it one of the safest and most effective interventions for children with severe UPJ obstruction. Many cases can be detected even before birth during routine ultrasounds, and timely surgical intervention ensures long-term healthy kidney function.
Congratulating Dr. Chandrasekharam, Dr KK Durga Prasad, Regional Medical director of Ankura hospital said, “This achievement reflects our commitment to setting new benchmarks in pediatric surgical care. It reinforces Ankura’s vision of delivering world-class healthcare for children, supported by cutting-edge technology and clinical expertise.” Dr. Chandrasekharam and his team will be presenting their clinical observations and outcomes at the upcoming international pediatric urology congress in Europe this September.
