The Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection jumped to over Rs 1.31 lakh crore in November, the second highest since its rollout in July 2017, in line with the trend in economic recovery, the Finance Ministry said on Wednesday.

“The gross GST revenue collected in November 2021 is Rs 1,31,526 crore of which CGST is Rs 23,978 crore, SGST is Rs 31,127 crore, IGST is Rs 66,815 crore (including Rs 32,165 crore collected on import of goods) and Cess is Rs 9,606 crore (including Rs 653 crore collected on import of goods),” the ministry said.

The performance was even more impressive when compared with the collection in the same month last year. Revenue collection in November was higher by 25.3% on a year-on-year basis. It also marks a major turnaround since July when GST collection had crashed below Rs 1 lakh crore.

The recent trend of high GST revenue has been a result of several various policy and administrative measures to improve compliance. Central tax enforcement agencies, along with the state counterparts have detected large tax evasion cases, mainly cases relating to fake invoices, with the help of various IT tools developed by GSTN that use the return, invoice and e-way bill data to find suspicious taxpayers, said an official statement.

The intake from Punjab rose impressively to Rs 1,845 crore from Rs 1,595 crore. The revenue from Haryana increased to Rs 6,016 crore from Rs 5,606 crore last month. On a year-on-year basis, the intake from Punjab in November last year was Rs 1,396 crore and from Haryana Rs, 5,928 crore.

The GST accrual from Himachal Pradesh rose marginally to Rs 762 crore from Rs 689 crore last month. GST from Delhi continued to rise and touched Rs 4,387 crore from Rs 4,045 crore last month.

25% higher than last year

  • GST revenue in November 2021 is 25% higher than November 2020, and 27% higher over November 2019
  • It has been the second highest ever since the introduction of GST, second only to that in April 2021
  • In October, the revenue was Rs1,30,127 crore, while in April 2021, it was the highest at over Rs1.41 lakh crore
