New Delhi, May 24

The hallmarking of gold jewellery is set to begin on June 15. In view of the Covid pandemic, the central government on Monday accepted the request of stakeholders to give jewellers some more time to be prepared for implementation and resolving other issues, an official statement said.

Earlier it was to be implemented from June 1.

A committee has been formed to ensure proper coordination and resolve the implementation issues, officials said.

Reviewing the progress at a conference organised by Bureau of Indian Standards, Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal said customers must get hallmark-certified gold at the earliest without any further delay. The meeting was attended by various associations of the bullion trade, hallmarking centers, jewellers, trade and export bodies, and officials.

The hallmarking of jewellery/artifacts is required to enhance their credibility and customer satisfaction/protection through third-party assurance for the marked purity/fineness of gold. Goyal said the step will help India develop as a leading gold market centre in the world.
