Go for quality not quantity. Choose classics over trendy and functionality over frills. Look for designs that are close to your heart. Create personalised spaces so that you don't wish to change the design and products often. In this way, a lot of resource and waste control is achieved. Avoid 'use and throw' elements.

Sustainable interior design is the concept aimed to reduce negative impact on the environment while focusing on eco-friendly design. In sustainable design, each stage of the design process is optimised to reduce negative impacts and to improve quality of life without depleting natural resources.

When it comes to sustainable interior design, the main intent is not to build a structure, but to build a future, say experts.

Let us not think of the concept as a mere trend to flaunt, as rightly explained by Suren D'souza, Managing Director & Principal Architect at Deksha Design Studio. “The concept of sustainability in design and interiors is increasingly vital. There is a growing recognition of the ethical responsibility to reduce our impact on the planet. Designers and architects have a significant role in shaping these practices and promoting such a culture. Such design focuses on reducing waste, conserving resources and minimising carbon footprint. It promotes healthier living spaces by using non-toxic materials, natural lighting and improving air quality.”

Repurpose and refurbish

One of the key tricks is to repurpose or refurbish with what is available. Avoid buying new stuff. Try to give a new lease of life with the products at hand. For example, a trunk can be painted beautifully, turning it into a multifunctional table as well, thereby eliminating the need to have a coffee table.

‘Look for simple pieces in your home and convert them into multi functional objects,’ say interior experts. As they believe, such pieces will not only look stylish but also serve multiple purposes. The designers also suggest to go for a grand statement piece instead of several pieces of art or furniture. Pick up one piece which reflects your taste and personality and let it be the focal point.

Look for family old vintage furniture, now is the time to repurpose it and give it a fresh lease of life. In this way, you will render eclectic, earthy, chic flavour to your spaces. Furniture can also be designed from recycled distress wood; these pieces not only are sustainable but lend such strong character and warmth.

Save energy and power

A little consciousness in choosing the right elements can also save energy spent on lighting. Go for right colours — a subtle tone of neutrals and pastels is ideal for reflecting more light, while rooms with darker walls and heavy furnishing need more artificial lighting. As D'souza suggests, “Utilise LED lighting, which consumes less energy and has a longer lifespan.”

Eco-friendly material

  • The designers are emphasising on the usage of eco-friendly materials. The focus is on natural elements that have a low environmental impact, such as bamboo, reclaimed wood, cane, and recycled metal.
  • Even eco-friendly wall paints and floor tiles enhance the wellbeing and goes a long way in contributing to an environmentally- conscious living.
  • While sustainable materials can sometimes be more expensive initially, they often lead to cost savings in the long run through energy efficiency, durability, and lower maintenance costs.

Declutter with design

Decluttering is not done just to create more space but to also follow the concept of "less is more" in terms of design and decor. It is not necessary to fill up all nooks and corners with artefacts or decorative items. The bare spaces have their own calming and relaxing impact. Such spaces render tranquil vibes, thereby creating a warm and positive environment.

Invest in durable, high-quality products

  • Use locally sourced materials and work with local artisans to reduce transportation emissions and support the local economy.
  • Invest in durable, high-quality products that have a longer lifespan.
  • Incorporate natural elements like plants, natural light, and water features to enhance the connection to nature and improve mental well-being.
  • Stay updated about the benefits of sustainable design.
  • Choose furniture made from certified sustainable wood, recycled materials, or eco-friendly fabrics.
