Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday launched the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) in New Delhi. The tribunal has been formed to hear appeals against orders passed by the GST Appellate Authorities and provide taxpayers with an independent forum for justice.

She highlighted the GSTAT as a testament to the government’s determination to continuously improve and adapt the GST system for the future. She emphasised the need for the tribunal to deliver jargon-free decisions in plain language, adopt simplified formats and checklists, and prioritise digital-by-default filings and virtual hearings.

“The outcome of GSTAT must be straightforward, with reduced legal frictions and greater simplicity. It should proactively address delays in litigation to ensure faster cash flows, enabling MSMEs and exporters to invest with confidence and ensuring citizens feel the benefits,” she said.
