From idea to impact: Youth entrepreneur drives fish farming growth in Tanghdar

Tanveer Ahmad, a young entrepreneur from Tanghdar village, has transformed the local fish market through his pioneering Rainbow Trout Fish Farm, addressing the region’s long-standing challenge of accessing fresh fish.

Before Tanveer’s initiative, residents of Tanghdar relied on supplies from distant markets in Kupwara or even Srinagar—a journey that often took hours along treacherous mountain roads. This not only limited availability but also led to higher prices. Recognising this gap, Tanveer decided to establish a local fish farm to ensure a steady supply of fresh and affordable fish while creating employment opportunities for local youth.

Starting a fish farm in Tanghdar, known for its cold climate and limited resources, was no easy feat. With support from the Department of Fisheries and guidance from agricultural experts, Tanveer set up modern fish ponds equipped to maintain optimal water temperatures and oxygen levels—crucial for healthy fish growth. “I started fish farming in 2022. Initially, it wasn’t easy, but the farm began to flourish by 2023,” Tanveer told reporters. “The Department of Fisheries supported me with expert guidance and a 40% subsidy.”

His farm primarily breeds Rainbow Trout and Common Carp, both highly valued for their taste and nutritional benefits. The initiative has greatly benefited the local community. “People here used to consume fish that was four to six months old. Now, they get fresh fish. We even provide home delivery, with supplies reaching Srinagar, Kupwara, and Baramulla,” Tanveer added.

Tanveer’s project has created new job opportunities and inspired many young people in the region to consider fish farming as a sustainable livelihood option.

Looking ahead, Tanveer plans to expand his operations by introducing additional fish species and developing eco-tourism opportunities.
