Rohtak varsity launches four-year undergraduate course in English
The Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) has launched a four-year undergraduate programme in English, enabling Class XII pass students to directly pursue a graduation degree under the guidelines of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Talking to the media on Tuesday, Prof Randeep Rana, Chairman of the Department of English and Foreign Languages, said, “The course is designed to foster lifelong experiential learning and aims to expose students to diverse cultures, historical contexts and significant literary works. It will help develop cultural competence and broaden students’ perspectives, contributing to their holistic growth.”
Emphasising the growing demand for English studies, Prof Rana added, “English language and literature has long been a popular choice among students after Class XII. This new programme aims to empower students by nurturing essential life skills, creativity, critical thinking and an appreciation for aesthetics.”
He maintained the carefully curated curriculum includes comprehensive focus on Indian, British and American literature, along with modules in Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Phonetics and Skill Enhancement Courses.
“The programme offers expansive career opportunities for students across sectors such as government, private industry, corporate enterprises, banking and media. Graduates will also be well-equipped to pursue higher studies and research,” Prof Rana added.
He maintained that a minimum 45% mark in Class XII was mandatory to apply for the course. Sixty seats are available and admission would be granted through an entrance examination.
“The Department of English and Foreign Languages boasts a distinguished faculty consisting of one Senior Professor, three Professors two Associate Professors, and one Assistant Professor — all holding doctoral degrees. Additionally, the department is supported by 39 JRF/URS scholars, who will assist students across academic and research domains,” Prof Rana added.
