1.39 lakh traffic challans issued in 2024 as Mohali police up ante against rule-breakers
This year, Mohali police has issued more than 1.39 lakhs challans over various traffic offences. Of these, 1,32,339 challans were issued by traffic police personnel and 6,169 by police station officials, the police annual report data showed.
Cops said an intensive challaning drive was being carried out in Mohali with almost 500 challans being issued every day.
During the latter part of the year, police also got stricter with drunken driving and consuming liquor in public places, issuing 1,537 challans.
The police registered 4,274 cases and disposed off 4,268 cases in 23 police stations of the district this year.
More than 3,000 people were also arrested in different cases, including 382 registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 277 for snatching among others.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Deepak Pareek said, “There has been a 66 per cent decrease in street crime, especially snatching incidents in the past five months. As many as 159 snatching calls were received in August, 125 in September, 117 in October, 76 in November, and 53 in December. From 15 functional PCRs during day time, it has now been increased to 30 round the clock.”
Meanwhile, night policing has also been revamped with five major checkposts at strategic points from 10 pm till early morning. Two GOs, 10 inspectors, and 100 cops in 45 vehicles and PCRs are deployed for night domination. On an average 100 challans are being issued daily atthese points.
Another, important addition to policing in the district has been the opening of Cyber Crime Police Station this year.
Inaugurated this year with five inspectors as investigating officers and DSP as SHO, it has disposed off more than 2500 online complaints in three months which were pending since 2022. Rs 2.5 cr money has been recovered till now, cops said.
Around 43 new FIRs have been registered here since June 2024.
The traffic wing of Mohali Police claimed that 400 cameras at 20 locations were made functional this year and 600 more would be made functional with AI based analysis software very soon.
“In Zirakpur, 70 radio frequency based CCTVs worth Rs 50 lakhs have been installed. 15 CCTVs worth Rs 6 lakhs have been installed at Phase-3B2 market. 20 CCTVs cameras worth Rs 7 lakhs installed in Jubilee Walk market,” the police said.
