A 10-year-old boy was killed and his father injured after the BMW car in which they were travelling rammed into a tree near the airport light point on the Chandigarh-Zirakpur road late on Thursday. The vehicle was going towards the Hallo Majra light point when the accident took place. It first struck the road berm, then hit a tree, and eventually veered on to the slip road.
The incident was reported to the police around 1.29 am by a passerby, following which cops rushed to the spot. The police said that Avek Verma, a resident of Sector 27, was driving the car while his 10-year-old son Amang was sitting next to him when the accident took place. They were returning from a relative’s house in Zirakpur. The airbags were deployed with the impact of the crash but the rear of the car was completely damaged.
Both injured were rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, from where Amang was referred to the PGI, where he succumbed to the injuries.
A police official said that the cause of the accident could be ascertained only after the mechanical inspection of the vehicle would be carried out by the CFSL. The police have registered a case at the Sector 31 police station and initiated an investigation into the matter.
