150 govt buildings in Chandigarh among property tax defaulters

As many as 150 government buildings in the city have been included in the list of defaulters for not paying property tax to the Municipal Corporation for the period ranging from 2004 to 2020.
The Executive Engineer of the Engineering Department, UT Administration, has been served a notice in this regard. The Electricity Department of the engineering wing of the Administration owes Rs35.5 lakh to the civic body.
However, no new property tax notices were issued by the Municipal Corporation today. ”No new property tax-related notices were issued today,” said a tax department official of the MC.
The civic body has been able to collect Rs99.24 crore from its own resources in this financial year against the expected income of Rs123.66 crore till August 31. The Audit Department has prepared a report which states that the Engineering Department and Public Health Department have suffered losses this year. The Bookings Department, Road Wing, Property Tax Department, vendors’ cell, Enforcement Wing, Fire Department and the Horticulture Department have collected less than expected revenue.
