A day after the e-challan system became operational in Mohali, 1,673 challans were issued in the city by

9 pm today.

The city survellance and traffic management system has made an instant impact with road users making it a point to follow traffic rules, the police said. A few road users jumped traffic lights, while others stopped well before the zebra crossing all day long, fearing traffic slips.

Like in Chandigarh, traffic rule violators will now be issued e-challans along with photographs through mobile phones. The new automated e-challan system is integrated with the Vahan and Sarathi applications.

The SP (Traffic), HS Mann, said, “You can feel the difference on the roads. Not wearing seat belts and helmets, using phones while driving, jumping traffic lights and speeding will naturally be curbed in the coming days.”

The DSP (Traffic), Karnail Singh, said, “It is a welcome development as constables cannot be present at every traffic light and enforce traffic rules. In a very few days, people will become habitual of following traffic rules and driving safely on roads,” he said.

On Day 1, 1,150 challans were generated for various traffic offences. As many as 351 high-resolution CCTV cameras are monitoring 17 junctions across Mohali. These are linked to the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) at the Sohana police station.
