17-year-old dies by suicide, mom cries foul

A 17-year-old student of Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, Chandigarh, reportedly hanged himself to death at his house in Zirakpur on Saturday night.

In her complaint, the boy’s mother alleged that the class XI non-medical student was tortured by the police in the Sector 17 Cyber Crime police station at the instance of school principal and teachers after which he reportedly took the extreme step. She approached the Zirakpur police and stated that, “Five months ago principal Sukhpal Kaur had called me and parents of three-four students to the school and complained about the students’ act of creating a meme page of teachers on social media. Although no proof of my son’s involvement was found, I deleted his social media account. Last evening, ASI Gurdev Singh from the Sector 17 Cyber Crime police station called me and asked to bring my child to the police station. As I was in Jalandhar, I told him that I could not come. When I reached home, I found my son’s room locked. Later, I saw him hanging from the ceiling fan.”

The boy was taken to a private hospital where he was declared dead. The hospital authorities handed to the police a suicide note, recovered from the deceased’s pocket. The Zirakpur cops took possession of the body and sent it for post mortem.

The complainant, a single mother, alleged that cops pressured her minor son and three others to come to the police station where they were allegedly beaten up and asked to sign some documents.

Zirakpur SHO Jaskanwal Singh said, “A complaint has been received against a cyber cell ASI and school management and the police are investigating the matter.”
