Chandigarh: Two persons have been arrested for allegedly thrashing a man and snatching his purse. According to the police, complainant Brijesh Kumar of Kajheri village reported that two unknown persons thrashed him and snatched his purse containing Rs1,500 at a forest area near the Kali Bari light point on May 12. A case was registered. Later, the suspects, Ravi (28) of UP and Chaman Lal (29) of Jalandhar were arrested. TNS

AUCT writes to Vice-Chancellor

Chandigarh: The Association of Unaided College Teachers’ (AUCT) has written to the Panjab University Vice-Chancellor raising concern over the non-payment of salaries. The association claimed that several colleges in Punjab affiliated with the PU have not paid salaries. “The colleges are flouting norms framed by the PU Calendar by not giving salaries. Teachers in various districts of Punjab are on performing their duty amid the Covid-19 pandemic. We request the PU authorities to intervene,” said Harjeet Singh, general secretary of the association. Session on citizenship

Chandigarh: The Postgraduate Department of Sociology and Charitra Nirman Committee of MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, organised an online workshop-cum-awareness programme titled ‘Critical Citizenship- Earning and Learning Sensibly’. More than 400 educators, professionals, research scholars and students from across India and from different countries — Jordan, Philippines, Pakistan, Ghana, Bangladesh and Srilanka — registered for the programme. 5 arrested for violating norms

Panchkula: The Panchkula police have nabbed four shopkeepers and a mechanic in the district for violating the Covid-19 protocol. The suspects have been identified as Ahmed, a resident of Haripur village in Sector 4, Preetpal, Rohit, Amar Singh and Rajinder Puksh, all residents of Kalka. The police said a case under Sections 188, 269 and 279 of the IPC and the Disaster Management Act 2005 had been registered against them for opening their shops under the non-essential category. TNS

Liquor smuggling: 4 land in police net

Panchkula: The police have arrested for persons for illegally smuggling liquor from various parts of the district. The arrested accused have been identified as Abhishek, a resident of Kharag Mangoli, Rajkumar, a resident of Mahadev Colony in Rampur Seuri near Pinjore, Narender, a resident of Sector 18, Panchkula, and Ankit, resident of Vees Bhareli near Panchkula town. The liquor was seized from the accused. TNS

Curbs imposed in 30 more UT areas

Chandigarh: To prevent further spread of coronavirus, the UT Administration on Thursday declared 30 micro-containment zones in the city. District Magistrate Mandip Singh Brar said regular screening and monitoring of the areas would continue. The areas declared as micro-containment zones are parts of Sector 2, 7, 10, 22, 27, 28, 33, 34, 35, 36, 42, 49, 52, Maloya Small Flats, Maloya Colony, Dadu Majra Colony, Ram Darbar, Phase I, and Modern Housing Complex and Mariwala Town in Mani Majra. 652 vaccinated at two-day camp

Mohali: The Residents’ Welfare Association, Sector 91, Mohali, in association with the Civil Hospital, Phase 6, organised a two-day Covid vaccination drive for area residents. A total of 652 persons were vaccinated against Covid-19. There was a special slot for the inoculation of house maids and other workers in the area. TNS
