2 Chandigarh pugilists bag bronze at nationals
Chandigarh, July 11
Chandigarh’s Parineeta Sheoran (48 kg) and Loveleen Kaur (66 kg) won bronze medals in their respective weight categories, at the ongoing 5th Youth Men’s and Women’s National Boxing Championships in Chennai.
In quarterfinals, Parineeta defeated Yamini Kanwar of Rajasthan 3-2 and Loveleen got the better of Tamil Nadu’s Srinidhi. However, they both lost their semifinal bouts and settled for bronze medals.
Loveleen, a student of Ankur Public School, Sector 14, had earlier won gold medals in the Chandigarh state inter-school boxing championships and bronze medals at the SGFI National, Khelo India School Games (U-17) at Guwahati and junior national championship.
Parineeta, a student of PML SD Public School, Sector 32, had also won gold medals in state championships and silver medal in SGFI nationals.
Meanwhile, reigning Asian Youth Champion Rohit Chamoli (51 kg) from Chandigarh suffered a 0-5 defeat against Madhya Pradesh’s Anurag Kumar.
11 women boxers from Haryana in semis
As many as 11 women boxers from Haryana moved into the semifinals.
Reigning Asian Youth champion Tamanna (50 kg) from Haryana displayed a dominant display of speed and strength as she convincingly defeated Maharashtra’s Simran Verma. She will take on Kusum of Uttar Pradesh in the semis bout. Asian Youth Championship silver medallist Kirti (81+ kg) dominated her bout against Aswin Biju of Kerala from the beginning which forced the referee to stop the contest in the first round. She will face Mohini Rana of Uttarakhand in the last-4 stage.
The other nine boxers from Haryana to reach the semifinal are Bhawna Sharma (48 kg), Anjali (52 kg), Neeru Khatri (54 kg), Prachi (60 kg), Ravina (63 kg), Priyanka (66 kg), Lashu Yadav (70 kg), Muskan (75 kg) and Pranjal Yadav (81 kg).
City cueist Ranveer to play for India
Chandigarh: Local cueist Ranveer Duggal, a student PML SD Public School, Sector 32, claimed the first position in the World Snooker selection trials. He will now represent the country in the upcoming World Snooker U-18 Championship, to be held at Romania (Europe) in August. In the national trials, he won all his matches to maintain his top position. TNS
Badminton meet from July 14 to 16
Panchkula: The 16th Ashwani Gupta Memorial District Badminton Championships will be held at Tau Devi Lal Stadium here from July 14 to 16. Jatinder Mahajan, general secretary, District Badminton Association, Panchkula, said the meet would be held for U-11, U-13, U-15, U-17, U-19, men and women categories. Matches for masters’ categories, including 35+, 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+, 60+, 65+ and 70+ years, would also be played. TNS
