Two college students were shot dead at their rented accommodation behind the market in Sector 15 here on Wednesday night. The victims hailed from Haryana.
The victims have been identified as Ajay, a student of SD College in Sector 32 and a native of Jind, and Vineet, a BA second-year student at Post Graduate Government College, Sector 11, and a native of Gohana.
They, along with their friend Mohit, were present in their room on the second floor of the house when four unidentified persons carrying pistols and sharp weapons reached there and opened fire at them. While the duo was injured in the attack, Mohit escaped unhurt.
The attackers managed to flee from the spot after the incident. The police were informed about the incident, following which cops rushed to the spot. The injured duo was taken to the PGI, where they succumbed to their injuries.
The police said the footage of CCTV cameras installed outside the houses in the area would be scrutinised to gather clues to the attackers.
Sources said both the victims had shifted to the house two days ago. The police said the incident seemed to be fallout of an old rivalry. Meanwhile, panic gripped the area leaving residents shocked.
Besides the DSP (Central) and the SHO, Sector 11 police station, SP (City) Vineet Kumar also visited the spot for investigation. A team of crime branch also reached there.
A case of murder has been registered at the Sector 11 police station and an investigation has been initiated into it. The police have recorded the statements of local residents.
The SP (City) said the attackers pumped four bullets into Ajay’s body — two in his chest and one each in his head and arm. Vineet was shot once in his head.
Political rivalry behind attack?
The police are not ruling out rivalry related to student politics behind the attack as the victims were reportedly affiliated to Hindustan Students Association. The police said the victims’ friends would be questioned to establish the motive behind the murder.
