2 held, Rs6 lakh, jewellery worth Rs90 lakh recovered

Two burglars have been arrested by the UT police, which led to the recovery of Rs 6 lakh and jewellery worth around Rs 90 lakh. The duo had committed thefts at houses in Sector 36 and Sector 38 (West) last month.

A team, led by Inspector Ranjodh Singh, SHO of the Sector 36 police station, arrested the suspects, Shankar Thapa and Shyam Mandal, both residents of Balongi village in Mohali.

The police said Madhu Sudan Sharma had reported that his sister and her family, who reside in Sector 36, had gone to attend a wedding in Goa on November 19. On returning, they found cash and jewellery worth lakhs stolen.

A few days later, another burglary was reported from a house in Sector 38 (West) from where a safe containing Rs 20 lakh and jewellery, including gold biscuits and a gold brick, was stolen. During the investigation, it was found that in both incidents, the modus operandi was similar. “In both cases, the thieves had thrown the DVR of CCTV cameras installed at the house into water so that the police could not access the images. This made us believe that both thefts were committed by the same persons,” said Nilambari Jagdale, UT SSP. The CCTV footage of a spot near the house led to the identification of the suspects, who were then traced and arrested.

The police said a gold brick, weighing around 1 kg, gold biscuits, gold and diamond jewellery and Rs 6 lakh had been recovered from the suspects.

Both of them have a criminal past. While Thapa has six burglary and theft cases registered against him in Chandigarh, Mandal has four cases against him, including three registered at Mohali. Both of them were recently released from jail.

Theft at thief’s room!

The police said close to Rs 11 lakh was stolen from suspect Mandal’s room at Balongi village. The police said there was a wedding near Mandal’s house where he took liquor and threw currency during the celebrations. His act alerted many present there and someone from his neighborhood stole the cash lying in his room. On coming to know about the theft, Mandal called up the Mohali police. However, later he denied that a theft took place at his room after the police questioned him about the source of the money. — TNS
