3 cops sent to Police Lines for 'thrashing' social worker, aide
A 30-year-old social worker and his friend were allegedly assaulted by police personnel at the Hallo Majra police post when they went there regarding a complaint involving two girls. Following the incident, three policemen — ASIs Sewa Singh and Ranjit, and Constable Deepak — were transferred to the Police Lines in Sector 26 and an inquiry was initiated.
The victim, Rohit Kumar, a resident of Burail, stated that he had been actively involved in social work in the city. According to him, two sisters aged 18 and 17, who lived separately with their mother in Burail, had gone to meet their father in Hallo Majra on March 15. They had an argument and called the police for help.
Rohit said he knew the family and was contacted by the girls’ mother for help. He, along with his friend Govind, went to the police post in support of the girls, but the police allegedly started abusing them. He claimed that they were thrashed by four policemen at the post.
The girls’ mother informed his parents and local councillor Kanwarjeet Singh Rana about the incident. They arrived at the police post and took Rohit and his friend to a hospital in an ambulance.
Rohit later approached senior police officials, after which an inquiry was ordered into the incident.
Despite repeated attempts, DSP (South) Jaswinder Singh was unavailable for comment.
