Three people sustained serious injuries after a verbal spat between the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) leaders turned violent at their Sector 15 party office today.
Videos of the clash, which took place around 5.30 pm, purportedly show Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) joint secretary Jaswinder Rana entering the office with his supporters before thrashing other leaders.
ABVP national secretary Aditya Takiar was among those who were hurt along with members Saksham Sharma and Aarav Raghuvanshi.
A few members of the other group led by Rana, along with Ishupal Chaudhary, Arvind Dinod, Abhimanyu Nain and Rajat Puri and others, were also injured in the clash.
The victims were rushed to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH) in Sector 16, where they remained under medical observation, till the filing of the report.
Authorities have yet to make an official statement regarding the incident.
While the local representatives of the outfit remained unavailable to comment on the issue, the ABVP, acting promptly, permanently suspended 10 members named in an official statement. The statement took note of their actions, saying they violate the code of conduct and disrupt ABVP’s unity and integrity.
According to sources privy to the developments, an altercation took place between Aarav and Rana in the Sector 15 market. The matter was temporarily resolved after the intervention of Takiar. However, both Rana and Aarav confronted each other again at the ABVP office.
The video shows Rana prodding Aarav to slap a member of the other group. Amid the heated exchange of words, a member attacked one of the youths. Things escalated with both groups coming to blows.
It was alleged that the group led by Rana were armed with weapons like kadda, knife and even a pistol. A person can also be seen carrying a flower pot to attack another party leader.
Saksham Sharma, one of the injured members, said, “The peaceful situation at the office turned into a nightmare in no time. It took us some time to realise what was happening. I was trying to stop the fight and got injured in the process.”
The exact cause behind the initial spat remains unclear, but sources claimed it stemmed from internal disputes within the organisation.
The injured victims filed a complaint at the Sector 11 police station. However, they claimed that the police refused to entertain the injured.
