30,000 road gullies to be cleaned in Chandigarh, tender allotted

To prevent flooding during the upcoming monsoon season, the Municipal Corporation (MC) has allotted works worth over Rs 1.08 crore for cleaning of over 30,000 road gullies.

M/s Secure Solution Private Limited, the firm allotted the work, will engage 75 employees to do the job.

An MC official said the tender had been floated and approved despite facing the financial crisis. He said the MC was according top priority to cleaning of road gullies as flooding posed a major challenge during rain. He said the cleaning work would continue for the next six months.

RK Garg, president of Second Innings Association, Chandigarh, said the MC should ensure the road gullies were cleaned properly as residents face inconvenience when roads were flooded with rainwater. He said despite spending crores, the problem continued to haunt residents year after year.

Hitesh Puri, president, Chandigarh Residents Associations Welfare Federation (CRAWFED), said accumulation of rainwater at roundabouts posed a major problem.

Congress councillor Gurpreet Singh Gabi said the MC officials concerned should keep a watch to ensure the firm did not do a shoddy job.

The problem of water logging becomes a major challenge in low-lying stretches of the city. Among such spots are near the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) workshop in the Industrial Area and the underpass that connects Sector 15 and Sector 11.
