Chandigarh: 3BRD Air Force team emerge hockey champs with 4-1 win

The 3BRD Air Force overpowered Sri Guru Gobind Singh College Hockey Academy 4-1 to win the Chandigarh State Hockey Championship at the Sector 42 Sports Complex.

The Air Force team was quick enough to find the lead, as Lovedeep converted a penalty corner in the third minute of the match. In the 19th minute, Sunit doubled the lead via field goal, but the academy lads bounced back in the 25th minute as Angadbir Singh reduced the margin to 1-2.

The fast-paced match witnessed some unruly scenes, when players of both teams had a heated exchange. However, the referees controlled the situation. As the match resumed, the academy lads tried their best to find the equaliser.

However, the Air Force team didn’t lose their temperament and posted two more goals. Vinayak netted the team’s third in the 39th minute, while Dilip managed to pull of the last in the 46th minute of the game.

The CISF claimed the third position by defeating AF Punjab 6-1. Raman and Vishal Rana scored a brace each, while Patras and Yograj netted one each for the CISF. Vijender Singh scored a consoling goal for AG Punjab.

Meanwhile, Hockey Chandigarh celebrated National Sports Day after the final match. Punjab Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora was the chief guest, and MP Malvinder Singh Kang guest of honour. Hockey Chandigarh president Karan Gilhotra was present on the occasion.

The Chandigarh Sports Department has launched a three-day programme as part of National Sports Day celebrations. The day is observed to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. On the opening day, a state-level yoga session was organised at the Sector 42 Hockey Ground, which was attended by citizens, athletes, coaches and sports officials. A volleyball match was also organised between the coaches and staff of the department.
