4 held for gunpoint robbery

The police have arrested four youths for robbing a UP native at gunpoint near the Jawahrapur Chowk in Dera Bassi three days ago. Thy have been identified as Rohit Kumar, Moti and Akshay, all residents of Karnal; and Satinder Singh of Mohali.

They are part of an inter-state gang that has been involved in numerous such incidents in the tricity. “The modus operandi of the gang was to target immigrant workers belonging to UP or Bihar while they are travelling.”

Mohali SSP Deepak Pareek said in the wee hours of Wednesday, UP native Zia-ul-Haq had booked a taxi bearing a Haryana registration number from Dera Bassi bus stand to Ambala railway station. “He was robbed of Rs 20,600 cash, an ATM card, a mobile phone and important documents at gunpoint by four unidentified car-borne persons, including the taxi-driver, near Jawahrapur Chowk on the Chandigarh-Ambala National Highway,” he said.

Dera Bassi DSP Bikramjit Singh Brar said “Today, accused Satinder was taken near Bhudha village for the recovery of the weapon. He sustained a fracture on his left ankle as he jumped from a rooftop in a failed attempt to escape from police custody.”

Further investigations to trace their associates are ongoing.

A case under Sections 309(4), 140(3), 351(1), 351(3) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered at the Dera Bassi police station on Friday.

A special team, under the supervision of SP (Rural) Manpreet Singh and DSP Brar, was formed to nab the suspects. “A team, led by Dera Bassi SHO Inspector Sumit Mor, collected key evidence from the crime scene and gathered inputs from the local sources, which led to the identification of all four accused. Acting on human intelligence and technical inputs, the team tracked and arrested the four accused on the Ramgarh-Mubarakpur road, Dera Bassi, last evening.
