500 girl students told about career options

Panjab University hosted 500 female students from rural and underprivileged backgrounds of Punjab for a session at Prof RC Paul Auditorium here today.

The event was presided over by Prof Shankarji Jha, Dean University Instructions, Panjab University, and coordinated by Dr Rohit Kumar Sharma, Department of Chemistry.

This event was organised in collaboration with ‘Hookran Brothers’, who are helping run education-oriented programme from Punjab and Himachal Pradesh since 2001. Their family has been running seven initiatives under the ‘Awareness mission society’.

Students were exposed to video screenings regarding career opportunities at the PU and inspirational messages by Prof Ronki Ram, Prof Neena Caplash, research scholars and students of the university. Prof Jha highlighted the role of Panjab University for acting as a role model institution for young students in the region. Prof Ronki Ram said the university facilities are always open for school students and such inspirational events are welcome to be organised in the university.

Prof Caplash, who is the DSW (Women), PU, lauded the participation of students in the programme that was organised under the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ initiative.

The event was supported by the Indian National Young Academy of Science (INYAS).

The students were elated as it was an opportunity for them to visit Panjab University, listen to stalwarts and understand what they can do with their careers. One of the aims of such an event is to check the school dropout rate of girls by exposing them to higher education opportunities.
