52% convicts lodged at Burail Jail below 30 years

Over half of the convicts lodged at the Burail Jail as on December 31, 2018, were in the age group of 18-30years, which means 52.7 per cent convicts lodged at the jail were below 30 years.
According to a report on prisons by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), of the total 440 convicts lodged at the jail, 53 were illiterate and 284 had not even cleared Class X.
The report revealed that of the total convicts, 232 were between 18 and 30 years of age, while 170 convicts, which turned out to be 38.6 per cent, were between 30 and 50 years of age. Meanwhile, the remaining 38 convicts were above 50 years.
The report further stated that 289 convicts were from Chandigarh, while 148 were from other states and the remaining were from foreign countries. As per the report, 36 convicts were graduates, 14 were having technical degrees or diplomas, while only 10 were postgraduates.
Among the 595 undertrials lodged at the Burail Jail as on December 31, 60 were illiterate, 460 were not even matriculate, while 48 were matriculate, but not graduates.
The report further revealed that 18 undertrials were graduates, two were having technical degrees or diplomas and only seven were postgraduates.
